Peekaboo - baby names
The project
Peekaboo is the ultimate baby name app, designed with future parents and their loved ones in mind. It transforms the challenge of finding the perfect baby name into an enjoyable and collaborative experience. The app begins by guiding users through an onboarding process where they can specify their naming preferences. Users can then sync the app with their loved ones, involving friends and family in the decision-making process.
Play prototypeThe app is the result of a collaboration with two friends, a product manager, and an engineer who developed it for both iOS and Android platforms. I was responsible for the entire design process, from crafting the user experience to defining the branding and UI. The idea sparked when a mutual friend shared their struggles in finding a reliable, good app for baby names. After some deep dives into the market, we realized there wasn't a satisfying solution out there. So, we decided to roll up our sleeves and take on this project to make baby naming a breeze for everyone.
Onboarding
The onboarding flow allows users to customise their preferences and sync with their family or friends. Peekaboo boasts an extensive database with thousands of names to explore, categorised into selectable name groups (such as "trends of the year, top 100, nationality etc").
Branding & illustrations
I chose to build a visual identity that could resonate with a
young-parents audience: friendly and inclusive. I opted for soft
pastel colours and a bulky, joyful user interface to create a
warm and exciting atmosphere, as it should be when you are about
to undertake such an important task: Choosing your baby's name!
I also designed a set of illustrations that embody the brand's
qualities mentioned above. These illustrations guide the user
through the early stages, such as onboarding, and the name
cards, each presenting a different baby expression on every
scroll
Name swapping & matching
Once the user completes the onboarding, they land on the homepage, where names are presented as swappable cards. Following the Tinder model, swiping left allows the user to skip a name, while swiping right indicates that the user likes the name, saving it for later. If the app is shared with a friend or family member, and both users like the same name, it's considered a match, and both receive a notification.
Membership model
The app is free to use, but after 10 swipes, users will encounter ads. These ads can be removed by purchasing a membership, which also unlocks special name packs for exploration. Currently, the app is in beta testing to ensure it is entirely bug-free. We anticipate its official launch by the end of the year. Stay tuned for updates!
